Patent Herbs

Pre-formulated (often called patent) herbs may be given in some circumstances if they fit with the acupuncture diagnosis. They are manufactured from raw herbal materials into pills, powders or liquids for ingestion or to apply externally by spray, ointment, linament or as a plaster.
There are hundreds of different formulas and some have been used for centuries. The formulas may be made up of various herbs which are put together to form a balanced application. They may be given for many problems e.g. as a tonic to help boost the deficiency of Qi or Blood, or to move blockages of Qi or to help expel a pathogen amongst others.
Further training courses should be taken by the acupuncturist before prescribing these pre-formulated herbs and Anne has a Diploma in this subject.
