What can be treated ?
Acupuncture is effective in the treatment of a wide range of conditions due to the fact that it can stimulate the body’s own healing process. It can be used as a preventative measure when you feel generally ‘run down’ and also when you ‘feel unwell’, but you do not necessarily present with any symptoms – you just know you don’t feel ‘right’. Acupuncture is very versatile in what it can treat. Some of the problems it can be used for, but not a complete list, are as follows: -
• Arthritis, including Rheumatoid Arthritis • Musculoskeletal problems and pain control, e.g. Tennis Elbow, neck and back problems, Tenosynovitis, Sciatica & Trigeminal Neuralgia • Asthma and Respiratory Problems • Sinusitis • Recurrent Infections - the immune system can be boosted • Hay fever - really needs treating before the main hay fever time of year to build up the bodies defences before the allergen is introduced. Treatment should be done during the winter and spring, two of three months before the hay fever season. Treatment in the hay fever season can help with symptoms. • Alllergic Rhinitis • Bel’s Palsy – this responds very well if treated within a month of getting the problem but can be helpful after this time. • Strokes - helps with the paralysis and speech as well as going towards preventative measures of reoccurrence. • Shingles – can significantly reduce duration of post shingles pain. • Whiplash - once it has been checked out by A&E, etc, for serious problems and these are not present, acupuncture can help to get the neck moving and reduce pain quickly especially if seen with a week or two of the accident. If left for longer then the number of treatments will increase but still acupuncture will help. • Acute stiff necks – these respond quicker if seen early in the disease process. If left for longer then the number of treatments will increase but still acupuncture will help. • Dizziness & Vertigo • Anxiety and Panic attacks • Stress • Depression • Circulatory problems, e.g. Raynaud’s Disease • Hypertension (High blood pressure) • I.B.S • Digestive problems such as Indigestion and Bloating • Tiredness • Addictions – smoking, alcohol, drugs • Insomnia • Menstrual problems, e.g. no periods, heavy periods, irregular periods & painful periods • Menopausal problems, e.g. hot flushes & night sweats • Headaches and Migraines • C.F.S / M.E. • Skin conditions, e.g. Eczema & Psoriasis • Urinary problems • Shingles pain • M.S. • Blepharitis • Infertility (takes up to 6 months) • Pregnancy: - - Morning sickness, - Turning the breech baby - can be done between 32 & 38 weeks but ideally between 32 & 35 weeks. - Induction of labour - this is only for normal healthy mothers with no complications. Best results are at 10 to 14 days over due date and it takes 3 to 60 hours to initiate contractions.
The aim of the treatment is not just to relieve symptoms, but also to improve overall well being. Many patients notice not only changes to the condition they sought help with, but also improvements to their energy, confidence and quality of life.
